Dear Danny, I've been looking through your book. over the past several days and it's a gem. It's a delight. I had great fun checking out the various ways artists approach those blank, bound sheets of paper. My three favorites are R. Crumb, Hal Mayforth and Elwood H. Smith. No, wait, I'M Elwood H. Smith. I take that back. That was my ego talking, not me. Really. Let me start over. Oh, to hell with it, just let me say it's a success and I hope it sells like hot cakes.

Danny, I got home late this evening from running out into the country to see a friend. The mail was all bound up on the table and I didn't look at it until just a few moments ago and it is too late to call and WAKE YOU AND tell you it's too cool.
But it is!
I think the new book is gorgeous. It's so fun to be in there with all those other journal keepers and to see all the fabulous art that is so different, and to read about their different attitudes.
And the book is SO THICK and the price is so reasonable. How can it not be a best seller??? Well of course you know it already is based on what Amazon was saying.
So congratulations. What a superbly great thing. I can't wait to delve into it properly.

Hopefully you have been encouraged by other artists to start soon on "An Illustrated Life II". Maybe you could convince Dice Tsutsumi, Joseph Fiedler, Steve Brodner and Pol Turgeon to contribute to your next publication. Again, great job on a terrific book.

Danny Gregory's book An Illustrated Life is out and I recommend it highly. Lavishly illustrated, featuring revealing pieces by the various showcased artists, this is a must for any serious artist. One of my favorite things in this book is the keyhole stuff: peeks at the artists' workspaces, with sketchbooks piled in bookshelves or on floors.
The artists featured are wonderful, R. Crumb (his presence single handedly means this is not a book for kids), Everett Peck, Elwood Smith and more... the art is beatifully reproduced, the colors rich and vibrant.
This book is nothing less than a creativity charger. A minute of leafing through this fabulous book equals an hour of motivated drawing. Along with The World of William Joyce, The Invention of Hugo Cabret and The Annotated Alice, this book quickly made my "books for a desert island" list. My only regret is that I'm not in it!

Hi Danny: I´ve just received the book.. Wonderful. Very interesting, full on life and well realized. I expected something less complete, less in depth but now I realize the burden you should have been through as coordinating all those images have been a real pain, I guess.

Hi Danny,
"An Illustrated Life" is such a treasure. It is a book that I would be so excited to find in the world -- like you said. It is a book I have been looking for years! I really like how well the questions became people's stories -- I often get little tidbits about people's journals in various other books I've bought over the years, but never a book just about people's sketchbooks. It is so inspiring and well produced and beautiful and, and, and... I can't believe my good fortune to be one of the contributors. Thanks so much for including me, my journal pages and my story. I am humbled to be surrounded by amazing artists throughout the book! It is one thing to send off a bunch of scans, quite another to see them show up in a giant book!
The book will be a big hit in our classes as well... We will be sure to put in a plug for it!

just to let you know when I returned from my chemotherapy treatment yesterday I found your book had arrived, an extra nice treat to find on a always difficult day, so many thanks. It is beautiful. I haven't read much more than your introduction as yet, you could almost have stopped there, it is enough by itself to inspire anyone to start "an illustrated life". I wish I'd had those words to read many many years ago, I think it would have made a difference, but as I keep saying, you have made such a difference at least in these last few years and I am so grateful. My drawings mean so much to me, especially now. Thanks you always and again and again. I'll let you more more my impressions as I pore though the rest, congratulations on your beautiful book.
